What If You're At Risk? If you or your doctor suspects you have or are at risk (see Risk Survey) for osteoporosis, there are several things your doctor may do to assess your condition, including reviewing your medical and family history, discussing signs and symptoms, conducting an exam, and measuring the amount of calcium in your bones with bone densitometry.

The results may show you have osteoporosis, meaning you're at risk for bone fractures. Or you could have osteopenia, a condition that's less severe but may lead to osteoporosis if something isn't done to prevent bone loss. In either case, you and your doctor will need to decide on a treatment plan.
