How Is It Diagnosed If the patient or her doctor suspects she has or is at risk (see Risk Survey) for osteoporosis, there are several things her doctor can do to assess her condition, including:

Review the patient's medical and family history
Discuss signs and symptoms
Conduct a physical exam
Have the patient undergo bone densitometry testing

Bone densitometry measures the amount of calcium in the bones. The process takes only minutes and is completely painless. Results can establish if the patient has osteoporosis or osteopenia, a condition that is less severe but may lead to osteoporosis if something isn't done to prevent further bone loss.
